--Published in 1853, Twelve Years a Slave is the memoir andslave narrative by American Solomon Northup, as recounted to and edited byDavid Wilson. Solomon Northup, a black man born free in New York State, detailshis being tricked to go to Washington, D.C., where he was kidnapped and soldinto slavery in the Deep South. He was in bondage for 12 years in Louisiana.Northups account provides extensive details on the slave markets in D.C. andNew Orleans, and slave treatment at major plantations in Louisiana. The work was published eight years before theCivil War, soon after Harriet Beecher Stowes Uncle Toms Cabin. Northupsbook, dedicated to Stowe, sold 30,000 copies, making it a bestseller in its ownright. After being published in severaleditions in the 19th century and later cited by specialist scholarly works onslavery, the memoir fell into public obscurity for nearly 100 years.
